TRIO Electrician PreApprenticeship

The TRIO Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program at The Guthrie Center is an outstanding way for you to get a solid head start in the high-demand, high skill field of electrical work. Starting your junior year you will take classes at Guthrie taught by a master electrician, work in a paid internship during the summer between 11th and 12th grade, all while you earn dual credit from Houston Community College.

By graduation, you should have earned your Level 1 Certificate for Electrician Helper from HCC and will move immediately into the paid apprenticeship program at TRIO. If you stay at it and work hard, you should be able to complete the apprenticeship and earn you Journeyman Electrician license.

2021-22 Electrician Classes

Electrical Technician 1

Electrical Tech 1 is part of the first year of the TRIO Electrician Apprenticeship program. The first year helps you acquire the knowledge and skills in safety, electrical theory, tools, codes, installation of electrical equipment, and the reading of electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.

Must be taken concurrently with Math for Technical Professionals.

Recommended Prerequisite: Principles of Construction or Ag Mechanics.

Math for Technical Professionals - A CTE Course for Math Credit

Math for Technical Professionals is geared solely for students in the Electrician Apprenticeship program, you can earn a high school graduation math credit brought to life in the field of electricity. The idea behind Math for Tech Professionals is to weave what you need to learn with your pathway so you can be a successful problem solver and use math efficiently and effectively in daily life. You will use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution. This includes mental math, estimation, and number sense to generate solutions and make connections and predictions.

Must be taken concurrently with Electrical Tech 1.

Electrical Technician 2

This second year of the Electrician Apprenticeship program goes deeper into applied electrical concepts in safety, electrical theory, tools, codes, installation of electrical equipment, alternating current and direct current motors, conductor installation, installation of electrical services, and electric lighting installation. 

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Electrical Tech 1 and Math for Technical Professionals.
