cosmetology

Hello! My name is Yolanda Matthews-Porter (Mrs. MP) and I love teaching Cosmetology. I am a native Houstonian and an alum of HISD as well as a graduate of HISD Cosmetology high school program. I am happily married to my loving husband, and we enjoy raising our son.

I bring to the Guthrie Center for Excellence over 35 years of expertise in the beauty industry. I am a graduate of North Harris College, San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, and Franklin Beauty Institute just to name a few holding degrees in Cosmetology and Cosmetology Instructor Science. I am a board certified and licensed Class A barber, licensed barber instructor, licensed cosmetologist, licensed cosmetology instructor, licensed esthetician, certified hairweaving & braider, and advanced certified makeup artist. I have a plethora of industry related certifications; wig making, massage therapy, waxing, infection control, eyelash extensions, advanced haircutting, and hair coloring just to name a few.

I have instructed students in the private, public and college sectors. I am a published beauty professional in eight of Cengage Learning, Milady Standard Beauty Industry Textbooks currently being used to instruct students at public school and post-secondary beauty institutes, community college and university cosmetology programs worldwide to become licensed professionals in their prospective fields of study in the beauty industry in forty-eight states and thirteen countries. I am self-published author, a teen success educator, a peer mentor/recovery coach, a cosmetology advocate/employment coach, a business owner and a highly sought after beauty expert used as a panelist, subject matter expert, ambassador, judge, speaker, and reviewer on many projects in the industry.

I am a published recipient for my academic, leadership, volunteer and community work and achievements in The National Scholars Honor Society, The International Dean’s List Society, North Harris College Esthetics course “Most Productive Student Award”, North Harris College President’s List, Houston Community College Dean’s & Honors List, The Society Of Leadership & Success, The International Women’s Leadership Association, San Jacinto College Dean’s List and The Who’s Who Among Leaders, Business Owners & Entrepreneurs.

I am an active member in many organizations and associations; TIVA, ATPE, ACTE, and CIPS. I am beauty ambassador and state captain for the largest beauty association in the U.S, former PTA President of KIPP Zenith Academy, former V. President of PTSA at Evan E. Worthing High School, and Parliamentarian for the Evan E. Worthing Alumni Association. I am an active leader in ministry and the visionary of a single mothers, teen and women ministry that seeks to embrace, uplift, encourage and empower teens and women in many areas. I am the visionary of My Kids Beauty & Barber Academy and My Teen Beauty Academy introducing the beauty and barbering industry to our future generation allowing them to explore the vast careers and industry opportunities through after school programs, seasonal and summer camps, birthday parties and certification classes. A few fun facts about me are, I know how to play the drums, cut the lawn, change the oil in my car, change a flat tire and I am great at decorating.

I was nominated as Teacher of Year Guthrie Center 2020, SBISD Teacher of Year Finalist 2020 and a recipient of the 2020 SBISD J. Landon Short Mini Grant Winner for Educators during the pandemic. During the pandemic, the expectations and standards in the cosmetology program did not change. Students were still expected to learn, participate, and strive for excellence. We worked both in class and online virtually simultaneously both in class and during firsthand laboratory experiences. It was an eye-opening experience as licensed cosmetologists were produced in spite of. I was able to offer makeup artistry and hair braiding 101 class after school during this time. I will be forever grateful for the graduating cosmetology class of 2022. We did it!

I do believe that students learn best when you believe in them, the desire to learn is there and they believe in you. My top priority is to ensure that all my students not only gain the basic knowledge and understanding of a career in the industry but that they graduate exceeding current industry standards to become highly marketable and employable licensed professionals in their prospective fields of study.

I am determined to achieve greatness!
